Welcome to the Ely & District Table Tennis League Website

Week 11 (6/12/09)

With Fulbourns Peters Zivtins pulling out at the last minute Ely’s Andrew Maguire kindly gave opposing captain Terry Lane a lift to the match between the two at Barway in Division one. Although Lane went streets ahead to beat Rob Pownall he was led up a cul-de-sac by Hugo Brown before motoring away from Mick Runswick. County champion Martin Gray made his seasonal debut for Fulbourn as a replacement for Zivtins and as usual enjoyed his three victories whilst Caroline Wright is still trying to find the right path after yet another season with more long pimpled rubbers being banned. With the match finely balanced at 5-4 Gray and Lane finished of the night by beating Pownall and Runswick in the doubles to record a 6-4 win for Fulbourn.

Despite another triple from Martin Freeland Soham lost 3-7 to Fulbourn II who had the previously unbeaten Steve Trevanion, the wily Jim Reary and the powerful Ju Young to thank for their victory.

Kin Choi Chan was back to his best winning all three as Gazeley drew 5-5 with Ely. Hugo Brown responded well for Ely in winning two and he was well supported by wins from Rob Pownall and Andrew Maguire.

Maurice Circus took the honours for Elsworth II as they surprised Soham Comrades II by winning 6-4. Bill Knibbs chipped in with a win and a walk over as Martin Hagon declined to play him following a disagreement over the latters serving.

In division two Countess fielded their full strength team for the first time this season when Danny Mitchell took to the floor after a year’s lay-off. However visitors Gazeley II turned up with 'Brick Wall' Wilkinson who maintained his 100 % record and with two wins by Martin Logan the match ended all square at 5-5.

Soham Comrades III are the new leaders of the division after an emphatic 7-3 win over Impington II. George Wood, Mick Foreman and Chris Rule had two wins each with Rule narrowly overcoming Martin Bootman 12-10 in the fifth, whilst Duncan Taylor carried the flag for Impington with all three wins in straight sets.

Fulbourn III drew 5-5 with Elsworth III with Max Schwiening playing up and winning his first league match 12-10 in the fifth against Richard Smart. Harris Ryder, also playing up won his three singles for Fulbourn but two wins each for Tom Smart and Stuart Humphrey ensured Elsworth's recent improvement continued.
